“The Cummer’s strategic focus on American Art will preserve our country’s rich visual heritage and enable future generations of our community to experience the depth, breadth and excitement of the fine and applied arts. It was a momentous event to collaborate with The Cummer on the opening of the first new gallery since 1992. The Thomas H. Jacobsen Gallery of American Art, opened November 15, 2005 in loving memory of my late husband, is a lasting testament to his vision of The Cummer as a destination for American Art. Like art, his legacy will endure. By sharing our private collection as one of the first of many exhibitions to grace the venue, the hope was to educate and to raise the awareness of the concept that art not only helps us to better understand the economic, political and social phenomenon of our times, but transcends them.”
